Chapter Ten

A few days later

Gabriel waited in front of the portal, suppressing the urge to fidget and clutching his son’s chubby finger instead. “Are you sure about this?” former King Consort Lucien inquired.

It was still somewhat strange to talk to the spirit of his mate’s grand-Kazyan. It had frightened Gabriel so much to have another soul inside him, to confuse his own memories with those belonging to the long-dead Xeetahn. At the same time, after he had spent some time in his Lucien’s embrace, he’d recovered a lot of his composure. That didn’t change the fact that he still didn’t know what in the world had triggered the strange powers that had manifested for both himself and his brother and friend. Sadly, Gabriel’s visions had become confusing and erratic, and no efforts he made could help clarify them.

For this reason, Gabriel had decided to organize a trip many people still had doubts about. “I’m sure,” Gabriel told Seyran’s Kazyan. “I realize Earth seems like a very distant and dangerous place, but it is, after all, my mother’s home, and I have made many friends there. I’m convinced one of them might be able to help us with this issue.”

The former king consort didn’t seem convinced, but neither did he dissuade Gabriel. He had shown a great deal of surprise at finding out about Gabriel’s half-human nature, but in spite of it, he’d also done his best to be friendly toward Gabriel. Gabriel had responded in turn. To a certain extent, he understood the long-dead Xeetahn better than anyone here. He might have never lost a child, but he had been very close to it, and the terror and agony he’d experienced in those moments would never leave him. At the same time, his soul had touched that of King Consort Lucien, and he knew how much the loss of his unborn child pained the man. It must also be very strange and confusing to return to a Xeetha that had become so different to find his son had grandchildren of his own. For him as well, Gabriel wanted to figure out this puzzle.

“So I hear,” the Xeetahn said. “Well, rest assured we’ll be caring for all those who stay behind.”

Gabriel smiled, feeling oddly reassured. By rights, he shouldn’t trust King Consort Lucien as much as he did. Just the circumstances would have been enough to give anyone pause, even leaving aside the fact that the dead Xeetahn’s spirit had basically possessed Gabriel. But for whatever reason, he didn’t fear the man or his mate. In fact, he was beginning to think that the former kings must have come here for some important reason, which Gabriel also aimed to discover.

Looking away from the spirit of the dead king consort, Gabriel focused on the group of people who would come with him. Orin and Zeli were waiting patiently for Lucien and Seyran to finish summoning the portal. Zeli was holding Cyan while Orin spoke in a low voice with Lyan, mostly about Cyan himself.
